Warehouse management systems
The storage of intermediate and finished products is central to intralogistics, as it decouples production processes in terms of time. Storage space is expensive, so efficient warehouse management is crucial.
Example of crane storage at Kronospan
in 2025, we implemented an automated crane warehouse in Denmark. In the old warehouse, stacks of panels were stored manually in a fixed grid, which left a lot of empty space for smaller stacks. The new system operates autonomously and organises the storage locations dynamically. Stacks are placed as close together as possible, limited only by the crane mechanism. Different panel dimensions, stack heights and remaining stacks are taken into account.
Warehouse management functions
Dynamic storage:
- Stacks are clearly identified and assigned to the item data.
- Dimensions are analyzed to calculate the optimum storage location.
- Single-variety storage in the stacking towers minimizes access time and reduces stock transfers.
- Efficiency and safety are ensured by measuring the heights of the stacking towers.
- Storage zones for production and shipping are managed according to different rules.
Automatic stock transfer:
- Access to materials from lower levels through automatic transfers.
- Temporary storage areas ensure the smooth flow of materials.
ERP integration:
- Warehouse stock and higher-level ERP system are synchronised.
- Demand notifications automatically generate stock removel orders for various production areas.
- Based on this information, the warehouse management system generates automatic crane movement orders in accordance with the current situation in the production areas.
